How to use

Find your council — type part of its name to narrow the list — and pick your band. If you don't know your band, look up your address on GOV.UK's "Check your Council Tax band" service. Tick the box if you're the only adult at home. You'll see the yearly bill, the 10- and 12-month instalments, and every band for that council.

How council tax is calculated

Each council sets a Band D figure that covers its own spending plus the county, police, fire and parish precepts. Every other band is a fixed fraction of Band D:

  • Band A (up to £40,000 in 1991): 6/9 of Band D
  • Band B (£40,001 to £52,000 in 1991): 7/9 of Band D
  • Band C (£52,001 to £68,000 in 1991): 8/9 of Band D
  • Band D (£68,001 to £88,000 in 1991): 9/9 of Band D
  • Band E (£88,001 to £120,000 in 1991): 11/9 of Band D
  • Band F (£120,001 to £160,000 in 1991): 13/9 of Band D
  • Band G (£160,001 to £320,000 in 1991): 15/9 of Band D
  • Band H (over £320,000 in 1991): 18/9 of Band D

Worked example

Birmingham's Band D for 2026/27 is £2,362.90. A Band C home pays 8/9 of that — £2,100.36 a year, or £210.04 a month over 10 months. Living alone takes 25% off, bringing it to £1,575.27.

Where it's cheapest and dearest

London councils have some of the lowest bills in England: Wandsworth, Westminster, City of London charge the least. The highest Band D figures are in Dorset, Lewes, Nottingham, at around £2,765 — over 2.6 times the lowest.

If you're moving, council tax is worth adding to the monthly budget before you commit — alongside the mortgage payment from the affordability calculator and a one-off look at stamp duty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average council tax in England for 2026/27?

The average Band D bill is £2,392, including police, fire and parish precepts. Most homes aren't in Band D, so the average bill per home is lower.

How are council tax bands worked out?

By what your home would have sold for on 1 April 1991, not its value today. A home built since then is banded at what it would have been worth in 1991. Bands run from A (up to £40,000) to H (over £320,000).

How much more is each band?

Bands are fixed fractions of Band D set in law: A is 6/9, B 7/9, C 8/9, D 9/9, E 11/9, F 13/9, G 15/9 and H 18/9. So a Band H home always pays exactly three times a Band A home in the same area.

Which council has the lowest council tax?

Wandsworth (£1,028.21), Westminster (£1,049.55), City of London (£1,329.56) have the lowest average Band D in 2026/27. The highest are Dorset (£2,765.02), Lewes (£2,756.17), Nottingham (£2,755.39).

Can I get a discount?

If you're the only adult (18+) living in the home, you get 25% off. Some people don't count as adults for council tax — full-time students, apprentices, people with a severe mental impairment and some carers — so a household of one adult and one student still gets 25%. If everyone is disregarded, for example an all-student house, no council tax is due. Council Tax Reduction for low incomes is set by each council.

Do I pay over 10 or 12 months?

Councils usually bill in 10 monthly instalments, April to January, but you have a right to ask for 12. The calculator shows both.

Why is my bill a little different?

The figures are the average for the council's whole area. If you live in a parish or town council area, its precept is added to your bill; areas with no parish pay less. The difference is usually a few pounds to tens of pounds a year.

What about Scotland and Wales?

They run their own council tax. Wales has a ninth band (I) and revalued in 2003; Scotland uses different band ratios. This calculator covers England's 296 billing authorities.
