How unit conversion works

Most units convert through a common base unit. For length, that base is the metre: every unit has a fixed factor (a foot is 0.3048 metres, a mile is 1,609.344 metres), so converting from one unit to another is a single multiply-then-divide. This keeps results exact and avoids the rounding errors that come from chaining approximate conversions.

Temperature is different. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin don't share a zero point, so you can't convert with a single factor — you need offset formulas. This tool normalizes any input to Celsius, then converts to your target scale, using the exact standard equations.

Currency uses the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, pivoted through the US dollar, with the rate date shown beside the result. These are mid-market rates: the rate a bank or card provider actually offers includes a margin, so treat the result as the fair benchmark to compare their quote against.

Worked example

You're buying a rug listed as 8 × 10 feet and want to know if it fits a room measured in metres. Choose the Length category, enter 8, convert feet → metres: 2.4384 m. Do the same for 10 feet: 3.048 m. So the rug is about 2.44 m × 3.05 m. Compare that to your room dimensions and you have your answer — no mental arithmetic and no unit mix-ups.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Mind US vs. imperial volumes. US and UK pints, cups, and gallons differ. This tool uses US customary volumes — double-check when following a recipe from another region.
  • Storage: decimal vs. binary. Drive makers use decimal (MB = 1,000,000 bytes); operating systems often use binary (MiB = 1,048,576 bytes). Pick the right unit or your numbers won't match what your computer reports. This is also the usual reason a file that "should" fit an upload limit doesn't — if you need it smaller, the in-browser image compressor will shrink it without a round trip to anyone's server.
  • Compare, don't assume. The converter shows the mid-market rate. If your bank's rate is 3% worse, that 3% is the fee — it is just not labelled as one.
  • Watch significant figures. The tool shows high precision, but a measurement is only as accurate as its source. Round sensibly for real-world use.

Are the currency rates live?

They are refreshed every working day from the European Central Bank's reference rates, and the date is shown under the result. They are mid-market rates, not the rate a bank or card provider will give you — those add a margin of typically 0.5% to 3%. Use the converter for planning and price checks; for a payment, compare against your provider's quoted rate. The UAE dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725, so that pair never moves.

Why do the unit conversions show so many decimals?

Conversions are calculated at full precision and displayed with up to six decimal places so you don't lose accuracy on small values. For everyday use, round to whatever precision you need.

What's the difference between a megabyte (MB) and a mebibyte (MiB)?

A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes (decimal, base-10), used by storage manufacturers and networks. A mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes (binary, base-2), used by operating systems when reporting memory. This is why a '1 TB' drive shows as roughly 931 GiB in your OS — both are offered here so you can convert either way.

Which cup and gallon does the volume converter use?

It uses US customary units for teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, pint, and gallon. Imperial (UK) volumes differ — a UK pint is about 20% larger than a US pint — so be careful when following recipes from different regions.
